But I think our super powers lie in our mutual love and passion for aromatics. Again, this is so helpful. I think I have a solid outline to work from now. been meaning to respond to these new posts ...hi :)

been meaning to respond to these new posts for a minute now... lol its been a hectic few weeks.

Anyway, nice to see you back on here, always a joy to read your little updates and takes on things :)

but also no bother if your energy wants to be elsewhere. I have lots of firm belief in your self-determination, etc.

I totally get your vibe about feeling overwhelmed... the Exec Funcs have been a bit hairy and erratic lately for me too, but mercury is out of retrograde now, so things should be a bit easier. (said with equal parts irony and earnest, lol <3)

Writing is hard! And a whole book, no less. Its a very impressive undertaking, but have no doubt that you will pull it off in some form, on whatever timeframe you are able.

... Regarding the research rabbitholes and whether past or future is more relevant, I would say... yes? Both, and? but also, very firmly, i dont think you need to put yourself in undue stress trying to cover the entirety of a very vast phenomenon all at once. You have a gift for discernment and instigation of community involvement, applied in a way that teaches other people how to discern and instigate. ... I think this can be a very solid and worthwhile seminal work on the subject that will be expanded upon by yourself and the other people operating in the same tradition.

... and yeah, i think past and future are both equally interesting and relevant for incense (and in general), and both give a sense of context for the role of practitioners/ curators in a tradition. like, what's the point, and what can be done to minimize damage to the world and still have a good time being connected to these superrad, very-ancient-but-also-modern materials/ methods/ vibes? not that you don't know this, I'm just saying i think you're right and can trust your instincts, basically.

And really, even just any amount of compendium you wanna put together for discussing the materials themselves is gonna be uber rad. I would be 1000% stoked to read your book even if it was only ~~technical information and no higher analysis/ philosophy (which basically permeates everything you do anyway so if people don't know then they aren't paying attention).

:) :) anyway that's that about that.

I love to hear about you working and hanging out with EOA Cher :) ! <3
y'all are two of my very most admired people. Both with so much to offer. Super stoked that you can enable each other and have fun :). Her coffee is literally the very best, and her floral waxes are something i will never get over and will probably hoard in some amount for as long as i live... The Indian centifolia rose wax is absolutely, hugely, life-affirmingly beautiful. The Egyptian orange blossom is a quintessence of soapy, gorgeous, old-fashioned floral love. Her hydrosols carry such a vibe... nourishing, soulful. Very exciting.

Anyway, you both make me feel very affirmed and inspired about wanting to be a producer of aromatics (and food and medicine and fiber and soil) so thank you very much for that. Everything good takes a long time but hopefully it will not be too many more seasons until i have a harvest of roses and violets and orris roots to write home about (and as a a catalyst for cultural-ecological regeneration). :)

more to say but maybe i will just actually email you again lol

Thanks for doing your thing,
:) <3
DavDav_Wundrbrrdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09538067972791748451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19154645.post-32133910084214444552023-12-15T09:05:02.661-08:002023-12-15T09:05:02.661-08:00You're awfully brave. Mountain misery has been known to make some people sick to their stomach from the scent, and I suspect it has to do with car sickness and the scent of mountain misery saturating the air. Scent memories can wreck a person. I have made mountain misery tincture, infusion oil, and a friend recently made a hydrosol with it. All have been glowing successes. Thankfully, we've moved past some of that and can really take this opportunity to educate people about what is really happening. It isn't about just one tree, or one critically endangered plant thwarting big money's plans to make bigger money. It's about basic survival. They don't realize we're on that endangered list as well if we don't do something about species loss. There are a lot of programs out there that you can join, tree planting groups/non-profits, botanical gardens for educating, help the local mountain nursery in their replanting-after-fires program (we have one here that grow and nurture Ponderosa pine saplings and then plant them in fire ravaged soils). There are programs operated by indigenous tribes in the proper methods of fire control and spacing of replacement trees, and if those types of options are off the board, do something from home. Plant a garden. Of course, trees take a long time to grow, but 20 years is a blip on the world timeline and 20 years is long enough to establish new forests. I feel like I'm preaching! Sorry. I know you know. Just so you know, there are massive efforts being made all over the world as I write this to re-establish lost forest and endangered species, and, as usual, the problem is the big monied. Always some push back, always attempts at capitalizing on the end results. They're in the business of wringing every last penny out of everything -- we just need protect the planet's interests over their greed. Again, you know this :) XOJustine Cranehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16224192086918363871noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19154645.post-10656617249323196232022-12-30T16:03:36.746-08:002022-12-30T16:03:36.746-08:00Absolutely... I've been thinking about this so...Absolutely... I've been thinking about this so much. Wondering how I want to structure a sort of collective, locally, to start moving against the loss of biodiversity and general blastedness that is becoming very apparent.... To some people, anyway. Will take some pretty wholesale restructuring, and like, marketing it to the general publics in a way that they aren't conditioned against is gona be A Thing lol. Really reassuring to talk to people who get it and want to move on it though, for sure :). ... I have a whole page of stuff written down that he told me about; process, time, that kind of thing, and a couple of practice starting points. All of this points to the standardization of the chemicals and the reaction they have to make them Schiff bases. He did not say how useful they might be.

Yes, there is definitely something going on there. I had wondered, after those two materials, the frankincense and white sage, turned all white floral, if this was something that could be tinctured and what that might be like. The only way to find out is to do it.

I guess what I'm trying to do is make it more cost efficient for natural perfumers to create perfumes with mock ups that continue to work over time and don't separate or end up smelling different after a year. It is a real balancing act.

Yeah, I'm not even certain I want to go back to Etsy or if I want to do something else. Maybe build a website that links to Etsy as the selling platform. I feel like there isn't enough on Etsy to do what I want to do. They do have the website option, but really, it's just another ploy to get their hands back into pockets. I'd rather have 100% control over some aspect of this selling gig. There is a lot to mull over these next 9 or so months.

I cannot tell you how anxious I am to get TBS up and running, even as just an entity without non-profit status until we obtain it. What will make it work are all of those diverse ideas and angles they bring to TBS. I've noticed in the past year that everyone is talking about Tapputti, so the society won't be an unknown entity when we finally launch.

Talk soon :)

Justine Cranehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16224192086918363871noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19154645.post-71198692630673674802022-11-05T13:28:39.090-07:002022-11-05T13:28:39.090-07:00Super interesting abt the schiff bases... quick ge...Super interesting abt the schiff bases... quick gewgle and i now have extremely cursory knowlege lol , but i can only assume that it can be done with naturals. ... just probably harder to like, standardize, and publish a Totally Scientifical paper on lol (plus , without the funding for scientifical institutions that comes from synthetic industry to push ttly scientifical develops in their pref direxions).

Even without deliberately angling for a chemical reaction, u&i both know there is undeniable molecular canoodling that takes place in a natural composition. Beyond just the fizzy topnotes getting all up the fixatives.... yaknow? Esterification and whatnot... (the glorious kind, not the zombie water kind lol). ... as in the case of frankincense and white sage becoming gardenia-y? ?? sounds esterish and whatnot to me . :)

lol :) :) i'm probably missing the point and i cant really pretend to know xactly what ur tryna do but. ... sounds really cool. <3

--------

I really hear you about the difficulties of having a functional hustle on any sort of megaplatform... &could go onanon as well lol, but

...,

while they have had considerable value for some specific reasons (mostly networking; allowing worthwhile people to be visible), the sheer amount of resources and exploitation required to keep the meta-behemoths breathing is rapidly becoming untenable. I forsee a revival of a craft guild mentality, with localized production nodes in a mutualistic global network of exchange and collaboration. Maybe that is what you are aiming towards with the TBS? Lots of respect and appreciation for that, regardless. It takes lots of different people coming at things from different angles.

:) <3
DavDav_Wundrbrrdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09538067972791748451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19154645.post-28258454634542555452022-11-05T10:05:25.874-07:002022-11-05T10:05:25.874-07:00I totally understand what you're saying about ...I totally understand what you're saying about Etsy pressures. I run a small Etsy shop (unrelated to fragrance, I make sewing patterns) and it's so frustrating to watch fees and restrictions climb up year after year and see how much everything hangs in the balance depending on customer reviews. I imagine it's even trickier in a space like fragrances and soaps, where tastes are so much more subjective and it's so much more likely that a perfectly good product might just not be the right one for you.Sophiehttps://thescentaur.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19154645.post-32600413592453543352022-10-14T07:42:18.605-07:002022-10-14T07:42:18.605-07:00Eh, it was meant with good intentions, I'm sur...Eh, it was meant with good intentions, I'm sure, but it still hit me wrong. I think if someone doesn't enjoy the work/art that you put out there, they dismiss it -- I'm guilty of this too. Also, another part of this equation that I didn't address in the original post is the difficulty just getting these things into production in the first place, those hidden costs and hoops -- insurance, licensures, fees, rising costs of raw materials -- that are just as deflating as someone not being pleased with a purchase or with your work in general. I feel like I'm whining :) Thanks for the support, Dav. Until next time :)Justine Cranehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16224192086918363871noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19154645.post-77908225480796577652022-10-13T12:46:00.955-07:002022-10-13T12:46:00.955-07:00Ouch, jeez. ... People can be so casually and back...Ouch, jeez. ... People can be so casually and backhandedly mean, lol. Especially to artists. Like "oh, you aren't some some corporate-streamlined, hyper-optimized production facility?" ... "Meh...."

Like, "nooo...? I'm actually effing not? Because I am a person, who is an artist-- with a life-- artfully effing navigating an entire society of economic bullsh*t...??" "Meh yourself."

lol

I love telling art trolls to "get an actual life lol" :3 It makes me super happy. They never respond.

To be fair, though, we are in a populace that has been consumer-engineered to have certain expectations and double standards about the products they feel entitled to. Ehhh lol. Its the Compassion 4 Humanity thing again... and pardon me while I heave a massive sigh of both exasperation and relief, because its not worth going to war over, and the factory-farmed humans aren't the ones actually at fault. Even if they are entitled assholes lol.

And anyway, "coercion is the least efficient means of obtaining order." (Ursula K. Le Guin)

....:
As the global industrial production economy groans under the weight of its own non-diversity and hyper-bureaucratization (with some jolly little degree of collapse not unlikely), one thing we can really look forward to-- as mutualistic, creative communities-- is that people will be given lots of opportunities to appreciate the individual effort and soul that goes into making literally everything.

Soapbox aside-- your perfumes are wonderful, delightful. Each one I have experienced really conveys a vibe, and has that je ne sais quoi sparkle/ presence/ attitude that can't be faked. Been really enjoying the little sample of Sunflower that came with my order. Puts me in the garden... with a rustic groundedness and simple joy that is also very eau-de-chic. Has a feeling, that. :) All of them do. Really serves as an example of excellence for me as I stubbornly muddle through my own self-teaching. <3

....

I don't think the urge to create is something that can be obligationized... & the urge to occupy a role as curator/ investigator/ archivist/ educator is something really sacred and ancient and important. Traditions of knowledge need to be maintained to stay alive; people who actually understand something, exist in it, and care to communicate it are super fundamental to any kind of functional society.

All the best, :) :) <3 <3
Dav

Oh and P.S.-- there is some evidence now that having covid can influence the way your immune system reacts to any pathogen, making it feel doomier and more 'rona-y than it may actually be... lol dont quote me and my lack of extensive scientific method on this but it seems to maybe a thing. (maybe less directly, with less comparison... I was twelve in '07... oof lol...)

but it is not a minimizable thing when acutely feeling a loss of connection,
& a sense of friendly, valued souls no longer in community.

It is a grief, for real.

....
and parallel unison is great'n'all but

there is an emotional reality to operating spiritually isolated, even while doin the good work.

"lol," lol.

Bitterjoy, Griefhappy, ++++, ....

things will get better. i believe they will.
maybe just collapse for a while more first.

not irreparably though. nah.
wouldnt be any goddamn fun to have it irreparable

& fun wins.
...

:)

I do have faith though
in the communities of good people...
still operating synchronously thru
whatever fragmenting and re-cohering they do....

... the brutality and gutpunches of it to just be weathered through

like, ouch!... fine, godammit...

guess i'll keep holdin' it down, then.
:...)

:,)
:)

<3,
DavDav_Wundrbrrdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09538067972791748451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19154645.post-88380198598869504562022-08-16T11:03:35.297-07:002022-08-16T11:03:35.297-07:00Yes, this "flavor" of 'rona is diffe...Yes, this "flavor" of 'rona is different and really sticks. It seems like I'm always tired, but having periodic bursts of energy where things actually get done. I realized that part of the dissociative feelings also had to do with not being on social media during the illness, and then making a pact to kind of stay off since it depresses the hell out of me anyway. I'm spending less time on SM and it seems like the creative parts of my brain are waking up. I totally understand the satellite views and reading sciency stuff. It feels productive and satisfying in a way that other internet stuff does not. Like FB and Instagram and . . . unfortunately, there will be no hiking here for a while. It's going to be super hot for the next week (today is 107), and all the nearby hiking/walking paths are new and unshaded. I'll stay inside and make something :) I would love to hear about your perfumery/resin/incense thoughts. Whenever you're ready. All the...Hi :)

Sorry about the damn 'rona :/

All the best wishes. Lots of people I know have gotten caught by this new wave, and it is a gnarly beast for sure. They all recovered fully w/ smell intact (if a bit protractedly) though, so there's that.

I've been having lots of interesting thoughts and new understandings (regarding parfum/ resins/ incensury, etc.) that I intend to share with you, prob via email, when I get around to it, at a yet-undetermined time lol. <3

....

I think of myself a someone who is varying degrees of dissociated much of the time, for better or worse, and something I find really helpful for re-occupying my own self is drinking some (green) tea (w/ chia seeds) and zoning into something interesting with good music (mellow but stimulating enough) in the background... sortof helps to recapacitate, regenerate my auric field or whatever. :) <3

History, Plants, The World, etc. ... I spend a lot of time looking at the satellite view on google maps & reading sciencey jargon on wikipedia... sortof just seeing the relation of things to each other...

&somehow the act of learning and see-feeling how things go into context rly lights up the neurons in a way that gets me unstuck and back in calibration, esp after under/ over-stimulation, under/ over-socializing, etc. :)

Also, Hikes---- being active in nature is the best! <3

....

I know its diff when you've actually been ill and I'm not tryna be patronizing-- please feel free to roll your eyes and unappreciate lol. :)

Anyway I hope you get some good time for yourself and can feel unpressured in your recovery.

Never bored and always inspired by your posts,

:) :) <3 <3,

DavDav_Wundrbrrdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09538067972791748451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19154645.post-6702092297402783282022-05-24T09:20:35.377-07:002022-05-24T09:20:35.377-07:00Hey Dav!

Stramonium is what grows in abundance around me, literally everywhere, in vacant lots, fields, along the side of the road. I rarely see anyone intentionally cultivating them. I haven't had much luck growing her from seed in the past, so I harvest from the wild ones. A nearby friend has a farm and datura S. grows voluntarily everywhere there, away from the road, far from herbicides and pesticides. For a while, I carried a couple of thorn apples in my purse after harvesting from datura that grew along the edges of a river side park. Live dangerously, yeah?

I actually ordered the giant ferula from JL Hudson. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thank YOU for reading this odd little blog :)

j
Justine Cranehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16224192086918363871noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19154645.post-2711771662782559552022-05-18T08:55:36.614-07:002022-05-18T08:55:36.614-07:00I love daturas so much. D. meteloides naturalizes ...I love daturas so much. D. meteloides naturalizes vigorously around here, and I have grown D. inoxia and wrightii as well. ... They are gorgeous, beautiful, bossy, sprawly, unequivocally assertive warrior goddesses & desert queens. Stramonium didn't wana grow 4 me. ... Which is fine because I think it has a rep for being a tricksier one of the sisters, and I prob had barely enough maturity to start developing a relationship w the mellower inoxia/ meteloides/ wrightii species complex as it was.

I think I may be taking a break from growing them this year while I develop my care systems and philosophies a bit further, but they are a patron saint for sure, and I know that I will grow and revere them in some capacity for the rest of my life.

.... Have you tried growing any of the Ferula clan? There are seeds of F. communis available via JLHudson (public access seed bank-- love: https://www.jlhudsonseeds.net/SeedlistF-G.htm) and I am tempted to try them in my highly ambiguous, rapidly changing zone 6/7ish... but I bet they would love you and your climate.

.... I recently acquired some of that rich, syrupy Afghani Galbanum resin from Apothecary's Garden, as well as some of the F. sumbul muskroot (&&&&++++ lol).... They are a revelation. I'm obsessed in love.... Not entirely sure yet where they are going with me, but it is a Somewhere, for sure, and I know that I will not be getting over it any time soon.

Their oniony-garlicky other cousins are super special too, and I'm still finding out how they play with others but think they are honestly very pleasing and magnanimous, as well as obvs very meta-spirituo-physically therapeutic. Thanks for causing me to notice them. :) <3

:) , <3
DavAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19154645.post-84841816172517672962022-05-01T15:20:57.006-07:002022-05-01T15:20:57.006-07:00cool :)cool :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
