Siam Benzoin

Siam Benzoin (Laos) from Apothecary's Garden is delicious.

It's a confection among resins, a sweet, frilly frocked princess in a crowd of rough and tumble Berserkers. But she isn't the least bit intimidated. Despite her sweet and innocent demeanor, with her flouncy pale pink tulle skirts and tiara, she's all business in her own sweet way, wielding a razor sharp dagger of opal in one hand, and a vanilla ice cream cone in the other.

Styrax tonkinensis is sourced from Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam, from trees that are wounded and secrete the resins. The scent is headily sweet, best described as a vanilla-like confection, something with vanilla in it, rather than just straight vanilla. Think marshmallows and vanilla pudding, Jordan almonds and pink candy sprinkles.

It's really quite extraordinary! Need to soften and sweeten an incense formulation? Throw in a few grams of this Siam benzoin, aka Benjamin, and you're on your way. I can imagine formulations with this benzoin and, say, fragrant pink rose petals and santal being something unique. A softly feminine incense, not my usual fare, but the wheels are turning.
